It is indeed the landscape, and the emotion it illicits, that is at the origin of protecting the Calanques and, no doubt, which also played a part in the first humans deciding to settle here. But behind this word and the extent of our vision, the landscape holds natural dynamics and societal intentions as well as the quality of our lives and that of future generations.

Why a landscape action plan?

A landscape action plan is based on the shared desire to look together at the future of a site and to build a strategy and action plan to feed into the regulatory processes that affect the landscape: Territorial Schemes, Urban Plans, Mountain Plans, National Park Territory Project, etc.

From its creation, the National Park joined with the urban planning agency of the Marseille agglomeration (AGAM) to create a landscape action plan with the goal of improving the landscapes in the Calanques National Park and the urban spaces that are near to it.

Preserving the natural space and welcoming the public

This approach demonstrates the desire to combine issues around ecological protection and transition with the development and reception of visitors in the iconic land and sea areas included in the functioning of a port metropolis. Supported by finance from the Ministry of Ecology, the landscape action plan constitutes a shared basis for management and public reception projects in the natural areas of the National Park.

This reference document, approved by the management board on 8th July 2016, thus has an objective of allowing everyone (elected officials, technicians, users) to understand the areas of great value and target their preservation issues. The National Park landscape action plan takes into account the natural dynamics and the development focuses co-created with all the stakeholders in the area (inhabitants, users, managers, owners, organisations, etc.) with the the aim of redeveloping the core zone of the Park and organising the boundaries and transitions to the natural area.
